TV Commercials in the 50s

oldtelevisionT.V commercials in the 1950s were very interesting because they were more like announcements of products features instead of flashy advertisements.

You can understand about this more, by reviewing a typical 50s advertisement. Lets take a look at the Lifebouy Mint Refresher advertisement. In this advertisement, the announcer states that Lifebouy is a Soap So Loaded with Mint, So Tangy, So Frosty, It Drives Wives Wicked. This line was supposed to make viewers get interested in the product and the entire advertisement is just three parts. This ad is on the whole, simple, straight forward and tries to draw viewer interested with a naughty line.

The advertisements in the 50s were not all plain words though, Music did accompany them. The musicals that went along with this advertisement were that of the typical 50s style and if you were to compare them with the advertisements today, you would start chuckling at the huge difference. For example if you look at the Kool-Aid Drink commercial, you can see the people in the ad singing about the drink, like they did in musicals. At the end of the commercial a voice over tells you how the drink is to be made. This musical advertisement style was typical of the 50s era.

The thing about the commercials during this period is that they were simple, very straightforward and the mannerisms of the people in the ad, were like of quaint, like when they lifted their hat off or even included a super hero in the product to sell the ad. In the 50s the most popular Super-Hero was Superman, which is why Kelloggs decided to advertise their product using Superman aka Clark kent in it. In the Kellogg’s New Sugar Clark Kent features, saying Folks, don’t wait, get Kellogg’s new Sugar Smacks. They’re better than ever, puffs of wheat, sugar toasted, and candy sweet.

In the 50s commercials what you generally noticed was that the lines in the advertisement were long and they give a big sort of explanation about the product. Advertisers felt the need to let the public know more about their product or service, so in most advertisements you can see an introduction part and explanation part and a conclusion part. Sometimes all this was done in the form of an announcement, sometimes it was modeled on a storyline. You can also find animation, instead of real people and the entire products features were explained through a jingle. this was supposed to be the way of drawing peoples attention back then.

In the 50s televisions was something big and everyone vied to have one. Advertisers tried to use this need to draw people to their commercials. They hoped that television would make the public be more interested in their products or services and wanted them to take it up. These commercials were viewed by the baby boomers and none of them can forget the first impact of these adverts, so much so that they are even complied into a videos today for viewing, Form a marketing point of view, these advertisements were effective and they detailed out the products features, how it is to be used and also its price, which is a lot more information than what you see in the snazzy advertisements on television today.
