The beginning of the 60s saw T.V commercials modeled on the same line as that of the 50s. You had everything in Black and White and someone made an announcement about the products features. For example, if you take the Chatty Cathy advertisement, it was more or less modeled on the way advertisements were done in the 50s.
As the sixties progressed, hairstyles changed, and so did the way people generally viewed and carried out things. This change was reflected in the commercials as well. People wore typical hairdos of the 60s for example, the beehive hair style.
In order to understand this more, lets take a look at the Pepsi advertisement of the 60s. This one has a stylish voice-over, with a man and a woman being featured in it. The make-up and hairdo reflect typically the popular dressing styles of those times. Another very stylishly done 60s advertisement is Noxema Medicated Shave, in which the voice-over says “Take it off… take it all off with Noxema Medicated Shave. Lots of new innovation and products came out during the 60s as life was changing and no where was this most reflected that through the advertisements coming out at this time.
It was round the time of the mid 60s that color came into film and not full color, but a different kind of color scheme – Technicolor. When this was introduced, it was brought into advertisements as well. Who can forget the famous Dr.Pepper advertisement of the 60s, featuring beautiful young women, set in a gorgeous beach location. The entire advertisement had a jingle at the background which said Get Going Again with the Dr.Pepper Difference.
The swinging 60s offered a different notion on lifestyle to people. Lives were changing and once again advertisements reflected that. Instead of families getting together it was more of men an women getting together in the advertisement. Still the voice over announcement continued and you could still see jingles being used to promote the product.
One interesting impact on advertisements was the Beatles. The jingles in the advertisement were modeled more or less on their songs to enhance popularity.
The thing about the television commercials, in the 60s is that they were getting to be a bit more stylish than what was seen in the 50s. The voice over were definitely more softer and crisper and the way the products were featured was different, particularly towards the end of the 60s. Instead of telling the product features like a story, the focus was on the best aspects of the product, a quick usage and them the benefit. Advertisements were getting a bit smaller too.
Changes in technology were reflected in the way the advertisements were made. You could see these changes in the sound and picture clarity. With Technicolor being introduced, advertisements were more fun to watch and they drew peoples attention even more. Still there was need for more creativity but this unfortunately as curtailed because of the limitations of technology at that time.
